CAROL MURATA HONORED WITH SMALL BUSINESS AWARD BY SUPERVISOR MIRKARIMI San Francisco, CA – Carol Murata, owner of Japantown’s popular Café Hana, was selected to receive the 2011 Small Business award by Ross Mirkarimi, District 5 Supervisor. The recognition was made at a special session in the Board Chambers where each of the Supervisors selected a small business in their District, including one by the Mayor, held on Wednesday, May 18, 2011. The City has designated May as Small Business month. Before presenting the award to Carol Murata, Supervisor Mirkarimi spoke of Carol’s business in Japantown which has been a fixture for over sixteen years. He pointed out how she’d followed in her mother May’s footsteps, who opened May’s Coffee Shop in the Japan Center when it first opened in 1968. Supervisor Mikarimi also noted that Carol’s commitment to the local community carries huge value as she’s continued the tradition of many locals getting together for a cup of coffee or tea, even a dessert. Carol’s devotion to preserving her heritage has extended to the point of seeking the Japanese Tea Garden concession and after being awarded the contract by the Recreation and Parks Department has, in less than two years, made major improvements to the tea house and gift shop. In her brief remarks, Carol thanked the Supervisor for the significant honor of receiving the award and asked for his continued support of Japantown. # # # Contact: DAWN SHALHOUP |
